Two+Two Collaboration Day tackling Youth Loneliness

Friday 16th February saw us produce the inaugural Two+Two Collaboration Day tackling Youth Loneliness , bringing together advertising, marketing, design and digital students from a range of Northern Universities and the Manchester creative and marketing communities.  They worked together in teams on a brief to tackle Youth Loneliness.

The day was just tremendous, students had over 60 mentors from 30 different companies, mainly agencies, to help them throughout the day.  Students from different disciplines working together just like they will when they leave university.

Dr James Duggan, Research Fellow, Faculty of Education, MMU presented research on Youth Loneliness to help the students understand the social challenge they were tackling.

Tom Richards, CCO of Havas Lynx and Chair of the judging panel, then outlined the brief the students were to work on, along with some tips to help them get going.

Nick Entwistle, Founder of One Minute Briefs and CD of Trunk got the students thinking and practised coming up with quick concepts.

The teams worked throughout the day, brainstorming, getting help from mentors, coming up with many ideas.  Their mentors just kept telling us how amazed they were at the ideas buzzing around.  At just after 4pm we finally had a shortlist of 6 teams.   Some very tough decisions were made and we know the mentors were gutted they couldn’t put some of the teams through.

The students whose teams weren’t shortlisted spent time ‘speed mentoring’ and after practising their pitches with their group leaders, the six shortlisted teams bravely presented to the eagerly awaiting room full of fellow students, mentors and of course the judges.  All were incredibly well received.

The Winning Team were the Roosters (well it was Chinese New Year) from Rebecca Rae-Evans group:

Ellen Humphries, a Marketing Undergraduate at Leeds University; Katie Davenport studying Advertising at Edge Hill University, Jamie Marshall another Advertising student from Edge Hill University; Holly McCann studying Marketing at Leeds University and finally Rebecca Lafond, Edge Hill University, Advertising Student.

Their prize?  Well they get to spend time working with Havas Lynx to help make their brief go live.  Look out for “YellowThere”

Runners up were Sean’s Horses with “Cahoot” and third place went to Mark’s Dogs with “Apart”

We finished the day with drinks, networking and sore feet but a sense of having been part of something special.  Here’s a link to a short video of the day.

We’ve had fantastic feedback from students and mentors and have taken on board any learnings too for next time.  Lots of feedback and comments can be seen @TwoandTwoUK plus:

“Thank you! We had the best time and can’t thank you enough for putting together such an amazing and Inspiring event”

“Thank you Julie Ollerton and the rest of the Creative Resource Team for organizing the amazing Two+Two event at the Federation in Manchester! It was such a great opportunity to work with other people from the industry in order to tackle youth loneliness!”

“I feel it is one of the most valuable things I have done during my time in university. The opportunity to get live feedback from professionals in the industry was fantastic and very different from anything else I have done.  I really hope that you continue to organise the event so others can benefit from the opportunity.”

“I had a great day, thank you so much for organising. It was brilliant and the students I talked to said they got a lot out of the day!”

“Today was fantastic. From what I know everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. Brilliant connections made, amazing people from all industries. My team was a finalist pitching our idea and it was absolutely terrifying but brilliant. Just thanks so much for telling us about it, was one of the best experiences.”
