You’ve got a job interview! The good news is the company have seen your CV, or have heard enough from a recruiter, that they like the sound of you, think you are a suitable candidate for the role and are interested in meeting you. First impressions really count, so here are our job interview body language tips.
The Do list
Walk in confidently
When you arrive, make an impression from the second you walk in the door. Walk in confidently and make sure to greet the receptionist politely – they may be someone who speaks to the employer afterward.
Firm handshake
It might seem like a cliché from old movie circa 1987 but make sure to give a firm handshake when you meet the employer or interviewer.
In the room
- Sit up straight
- Keep smiling
- Maintain eye contact throughout

And the don’t list?
Don’t chew gum
Of course it is nice to feel minty fresh for an interview but make sure to remove gum before you approach the building.
Try not to
- Play with your hair
- Fidget – clicking with your pen etc.
- Come across as too confident because sadly, this can come across as arrogant.
Our final tip
Being a little on the nervous side is fine. Remember everyone has been in this exact same situation before, even the person interviewing you.
Good luck with your interview.
